The Soap Lather Test
Fill a clear glass with water straight from your tap. Add 5 to 6 drops of liquid soap or a small squeeze of shampoo. Cover the top with your hand and shake hard for about 10 seconds.
What to look for: Soft water makes a rich, white, bubbly foam that fills the top half of the glass. Hard water makes very little foam - the water just looks cloudy or greyish and barely bubbles.

The Kettle or Vessel Test
Boil water in your kettle, vessel, or electric water heater. Let it cool completely. Then look inside at the base and along the walls.

Frequently asked questions about hard water in India
Why does my hair fall so much after showering?
Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits on each hair strand. This lifts the hair cuticle, weakens the shaft, and causes breakage and increased hair fall over time. The problem is especially bad in borewell-dependent cities where hardness is above 300 ppm. No shampoo or conditioner can fix this as long as the water source itself is hard - the only real fix is treating the water before it reaches your shower.
Is borewell water always hard water in India?
In most cases, yes. Borewell water travels through calcium and magnesium-rich rock before it reaches your tank, picking up high mineral concentrations along the way. In North and West India, borewell water typically reads between 300 and 1,500 ppm - well above the 150 ppm level where hard water effects start showing up.
Why does soap not lather properly in my bathroom?
Calcium and magnesium in hard water react with soap and stop it from foaming. Instead of lather, you get a grey, sticky scum. This is why hard water forces you to use 30 to 50% more soap, shampoo, and detergent than you actually need - and why nothing ever quite feels clean no matter how much you use.
What TDS level means hard water in India?

How do I test water hardness at home without a kit?

Can hard water cause skin problems or make eczema worse?
